Moisture, air and ventilation
I have mold in my house. What now?
The water runs in along the window frames and causes mold in the house.
What now?
First look for the cause
The causes of damp and mold in your home can vary widely. There could be a leak, for example, but it could also be due to inadequate ventilation (and heating) or a structural issue in your home. First, try to determine the cause.
What can you do yourself?
You can limit moisture build-up in the home by ventilating well:
- Ventilate 24 hours a day: always leave grilles and flap windows open, and never turn off the ventilation system.
- Provide extra ventilation when cooking, showering, hanging laundry, cleaning, doing DIY projects, or when there are many people in the house: Open windows wider. Set the ventilation system to its highest setting.
In addition, it's important to regularly heat your home to at least 17 degrees Celsius. Moisture condenses on cold surfaces, and mold can quickly develop.
Also prevent extra moisture in the house by:
- keep interior doors closed while cooking and showering
- to cook with the lids on the pans and with the extractor hood on
- After showering, dry the bathroom walls and floor with a squeegee
- let the laundry dry outside or in a well-ventilated area
Write to the landlord
If you have done everything possible to prevent excessive moisture in your home and the problems persist, contact your landlord.

Good ventilation in the house
Here are a number of rules for good ventilation, as regularly highlighted by the Housing Association in its publications.
Indoor air quickly becomes polluted. This can occur through cooking, showering, and cleaning, as well as simply breathing. Polluted air is unhealthy. To keep the air in your home healthy, it's important to ventilate regularly.
How to do this, you can read below.
Always keep vents and windows open to ensure healthy air in your home.
What is ventilation?
Ventilation means continuously supplying clean air into the home and removing polluted air 24 hours a day.
NB:
Ventilating is not the same as airing.
Ventilating involves opening windows and doors wide and refreshing the air in your home for a short time (15 to 30 minutes). Ventilating isn't enough to keep the air in your home healthy.
Why is good ventilation important?
Good ventilation is important for your health and safety. Poor ventilation can create unhealthy air in your home within minutes. Often, you don't notice this immediately. Sometimes you feel a bit drowsy, tired, or have trouble concentrating. In the long run, this can lead to health problems and even illnesses, such as headaches, insomnia, asthma, and allergies.
Burning fossil fuels can also produce deadly carbon monoxide.
This happens more quickly with open combustion systems such as a water heater, gas stove, or kerosene heater. But it can also occur with a high-efficiency boiler.

Good ventilation is important for your health and for your home.
That is why we give you a number of tips below for ventilating your home.
- Open your window for at least 15 minutes
Or leave the window slightly open all day. This way, you save energy. Heating a damp house is more expensive than heating some fresh air.

- Drying the laundry in the house and many plants provide extra humidity in the house.
Then provide extra ventilation so that the moisture can escape.
- Curtains in the house?
Don't hang them in front of radiators. Open curtains during the day to allow air to circulate freely through the ventilation grilles.
- Finished showering? Dry the shower with a squeegee.
- After showering, open a window or leave the ventilation on for another hour.
- Heat all rooms in your home evenly; 19 to 21 degrees Celsius is a comfortable temperature. Set the heating to 16°C at night. With underfloor heating, it's best to keep the temperature constant and not lower the thermostat.
- Mechanical ventilation in the house?
Always set this to setting 1. And while cooking and showering, set it to the highest setting.
stand.
- Close the bathroom door while showering, then the ventilation system will work better.
