Using electricity cost-effectively when the sun is shining

If you have solar panels or a dynamic energy contract, it makes sense to use electricity when the sun is shining. This saves you money and also helps to reduce the load on the power grid.

There are several reasons to use electricity when the sun is shining:

If you have solar panels, the electricity they generate is free if you use it immediately.

If you have a dynamic energy contract, electricity prices are often at their lowest during the day, between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM.

Keeping your energy bill affordable

Energy is becoming increasingly expensive. To keep your energy bill affordable, it is wise to save energy. You can also be smart about the energy you do need: try to use electricity as much as possible when it is cheap—or even free.

Tips for using electricity during the day

Use these tips to maximize your electricity consumption while the sun is shining:

Run your washing machine, tumble dryer, and dishwasher during the day. If your appliances have a timer function, make use of it.

Charge your electric bike, fatbike, scooter, mobility scooter (or car) during the day.

Adjust your electric water heater and heat pump settings to take full advantage of cheaper daytime electricity.

If you cannot easily adjust these settings yourself, ask your landlord to do it for you.

Whenever possible, try to time your use of electric cooktops (electric, ceramic, or induction), electric ovens, and air conditioning to coincide with periods when electricity prices are lower.

Keep it simple

Many household electrical appliances use very little power, or are better left running rather than being turned off. Think of items like your refrigerator and freezer, mobile phone, tablet, computer, or power tools such as a drill or screwdriver. Continue using these devices just as you normally would.

Monitor your electricity usage with an app or display

Do you want to know exactly how much electricity you use throughout the day? Or how much power your solar panels are feeding back into the grid? You can find out by using an app or an energy display connected to your smart meter.
